Help With Posting A New Item

This page more fully explains how to completely, accurately, and effectively post an item with Old Iron Auction.

Title/Item Name:
No HTML

In this Box, type a descriptive title for the item you are posting. You can not use HTML markup tags in this text box.

Category:
Select One

Choose the category that best describes the item you are selling

Location of Item
This is very important to bidders

It is very important and useful if you accurately specify, in this box, the location of the item you are selling

Who pays for shipping?
This also is very important to bidders

You should specify who must pay for shipping if the item successfully sells. On small items, we recommend raising your reserve high enough to cover shipping expenses and paying for shipping yourself. It will simplify closing the transaction greatly.

Image Handling at Old Iron Aucton:
We at Old Iron Auction are now pleased to offer automated image file handling for your auction items. To upload one of your images, simply use the Image Upload field found on the item posting page (and the modification and reposting pages too). The system will present a file open dialog box that will allow you to browse and find the image file on your local system and networks. Highlight the file, click "Open" and fill out the rest of the New Item page. When you submit your item, your image file will be uploaded to Old Iron Auction's image hosting system. There are only few requirements and notes for uploading images that you need to be aware of:

  • The image file must be 150,000 bytes or less.
  • The file is scanned for viruses, so don't try uploading a file known to contain a virus.
  • For security reasons, we require that your browser be able to confirm to our system that the file is indeed of type "image". Some browsers do not do this well or consistently (think older versions of Internet Explorer and some minor releases of Netscape) If your file is an image, but our software gives an error after submission that it is not an image, then your browser has incorrectly identified the file(or not identified it at all). In these cases, we will ignore the file and will not allow it's upload. At this point, there is nothing we can do except to upload the file manually for you. Email the file to us and we'll load it for you.
  • If your image is hosted at another web site (ie, your personal page, photopoint, etc), you can still key in that URL in the IMAGE URL field like you always have before.
  • If you upload an image file AND you specify a URL, our software will ignore the URL and use the uploaded file.

Image Upload:
Optional, must be no larger tn 150KB

Click the "Browse" Button, and using the standard "File Open" dialog box that presents itself, navigate to the folder that contains your image file. Highlight the file, then click "Open". Fill out the rest of the Item details and when you submit the form after completeion of the form, the image file will upload to our system.

Image URL:
Optional, should be no larger than 200x200

Place in this box, any Internet resource that will help the bidders get a better idea of what you are selling. If you want us to host the image, use the Image Upload field found above this field. If you specify by a file upload AND an image URL, the file upload takes precendant and this field is ignored. The URL can point to any valid URL (i.e. web page, image resource, sound file, etc).

Days Until Close:
14-28

You can choose how long you would like to make the item available to bidders. Your choices are between 14 and 28 days, inclusively.

Description:
May include HTML - This should include the condition of the item, payment and shipping information, and any other information the buyer should know.

Here you should very completely, and accurately, describe the item you are selling. Be sure to include any special information about the condition or rarity of the item. We recommend also clarifying your shipping expectations. You may use HTML markup in this box.

Your Handle/Alias:
Used to track your post

In this box, type in your bidder's/seller's alias. This must be a real alias that you have received via the registration process. If you haven't registered, click on the bidder registration link. When complete, click on your browser's "back button" a time or two until you are returned to the Item Posting Page.

Your Password:
Must be valid

In this box, type in your bidder's/seller's password. Again, this must be a real password that you have received via the registration process. If you have forgotten your password, use our "Forgotten Password" page.

Your Reserve Price:
You are not obligated to sell below this price. Leave blank if none.

Any amount entered in this box becomes the absolute minimum the highest bid must exceed to successfully buy the item. Under all circumstances, all winning bids exceeding this amount must be sold to the high bidder.
